Text Familiarity - From Frog & Toad to The Giver: How Fiction Increases in Complexity

In this workshop, participants will explore the different ways fiction increases in complexity. This progression of text complexity will offer participants a variety ways to reach and teach their students when reading fiction. Participants will leave this session with practical information they can teach anytime they work with fiction in their classrooms.


Methods - Conversations with Kids: Powerful Ways to Confer with Readers and Move Them Forward
Maggie Beattie Roberts

In this session, participants will study a variety of ways to lead powerful conferences with their students. Participants will aim to teach the reader, not just the book. Ranging from reading practices to text characteristics to reading skills, participants will study a range of ways to boost students’ reading to their next level. This session will also dive into the methods of powerful conferring.

In this workshop, participants will explore the different ways nonfiction increases in complexity. This progression of text complexity will offer participants a variety ways to reach and teach their students when reading nonfiction. Participants will leave this session with practical information they can teach anytime they work with nonfiction in their classrooms.


Methods - High-Leverage Methods for Powerful and Effective Whole Class Teaching
Maggie Beattie Roberts

In this session, participants will study a range of high-leverage methods for powerful and effective whole class teaching. Teachers will explore a variety of teaching methods from mini-lessons to instructional read aloud, from dramatic storytelling to mini-lectures, from shared reading to shared writing. This workshops aims to pair different teaching methods with desired outcomes for learning to maximize the effectiveness of whole class teaching.

Text Familiarity - Supporting Readers: What Primary Teachers Know that Can Support Older Readers
Kate Roberts

In this workshop, participants will focus on older students who may encounter difficulty while reading. By tapping into what primary teachers know about the lower levels of text complexity, participants will explore ways to unlock reading difficulties their students encounter. This session is a crash course in lower levels of text complexity.


Methods - Reaching All of Our Kids: Small Group Instruction
Maggie Beattie Roberts 

In this session, participants will learn multiple ways to pull and teach effective small groups of students. Leaning on a variety of teaching methods, participants will discuss and practice different ways to coach students in small group settings. This session guides teachers to lean on data in efficient ways to orchestrate the most effective groups of students.
